As I finish my clinical year, I am evaluating my academic performance to assess my readiness for the PANCE and planning my preparation. I plan to start studying for the PANCE about four weeks prior to my exam, which is scheduled for January 22, 2022. However, since a review course is scheduled for the beginning of January, I will be studying for a total of five weeks.
Many of the exams I have taken thus far have helped me prepare for the PANCE such as the PACKRATs, end of rotation exams and the end of curriculum exam. These exams have helped me understand my areas of weakness and where I might need to dedicate more time when studying, such as in hematology, neurology and OBGYN. I used my end of curriculum results to guide my planning, as already mentioned above. Based on these results, my areas of weakness include neurology, endocrinology, infectious disease and renal as well as in clinical intervention and diagnostic studies. My strengths include cardiology, dermatology and HEENT as well as clinical therapeutics and history and physical.
Rosh Review continues to be one of my favorite methods for studying and preparing, as the explanations are detailed and provide visuals that help solidify the information. However, I recently realized I need to change some of my studying habits to effectively try to deliver the information to myself. It is easy for me to either just stare at my computer/PANCE Prep Pearls or mindlessly do Rosh questions without engaging with the information. Therefore, no matter the day or topics I am studying, I plan to study in shorter blocks of 45 minutes to one hour at a time and for about six to eight hours a day, with breaks in-between. I do my best studying in the morning and early afternoon and I will therefore dedicate these hours of the day to studying.
I have included a study plan below. If I find myself not having enough time on one single day for a topic, I will make sure to complete it by the next day, as to keep myself on track. During each topic day, I will be following PANCE blueprint to review each topic that is outlined. I plan to review each topic by using PANCE Prep Pearls (PPP), Osmosis for visuals and reviewing didactic notes. I have a notebook where I write down notes from each topic/resource, that way I can review during the last week as needed. I am going to be extremely mindful of not just thoughtlessly writing down notes, but engaging with the material, such as by talking to myself out loud so I know I understand the disease process. I especially like using several of these sources because it allows me to go through the pathophysiology of each disease, which is very helpful for my understanding. Each day I plan to do about 50-100 questions from each topic from Rosh Review, depending on the topic. I will review incorrect answers. Ideally, I would like to go through all 3,100 Rosh questions, which I may start prior to the four-week period. While Rosh Review will be my main question bank, I will use Kaplan or Exam Master if I find I need to switch my studying.
In the last week I will review areas of weakness and areas that I have difficulty remembering. I will also focus on topics that are a high percentage on the PANCE such as cardiology and pulmonology.
